Getting God's AttentionI know that writing about talking to God may offend some, but hopefully you will understand that prayer is absolutely as important to my life as charts, school communication and lowered standards. Since my husband is from the Middle East, it often surprises people that we are a Christian family. My husband and I were both born into the church, but our relationship with God goes beyond that. We pray like God is listening, like He's interested, and like He's going to answer. Because we believe that those things are true. God is always paying attention to us. It always amazes me that Christianity has gotten the reputation of being a religion of do's and don'ts with a judgmental God ready to zap us at a moment's notice. To me, the cool thing about Christianity is that it teaches that we are perfect because of Jesus. What we aren't, He is. What we can't do, He can. He meets us where we are and fills in the gap, making us new. He doesn't expect perfection; in fact, that's the whole reason we need Him. None of us are perfect. This is a comfort to me as a parent, because half the time my parenting skills are pretty bad. I admit this to God, and ask Him to honor my intentions and help my kids to grow into normal, healthy adults in spite of me. This is a comforting fact to my kids, too. When they make the same mistakes over and over, they know that God is there to forgive them, and to love them back onto the right track again. I've been praying for a long time, and prayer has definitely shaped the person I am. I also believe it has shaped my children. We have seen the blessings of God, and he has given us that bottom of the gut happiness that sticks around despite the bad things that happen in our lives. Most lately, though prayer, God has given me the grace and knowledge to help my ADHD boys become the men they were created to be. So I encourage you to pray. Talk to God. Ask Him to give you wisdom and grace to help you with the wonderful child He has put in your life. Tell him what you're feeling, and ask Him to meet you where you are. Make prayer a daily habit, but also an automatic reflex. You can talk to God anytime and anywhere like He's right beside you. He really is paying attention. And you can know that He is listening, He is interested, and He is going to answer. I recently received an email from a reader recommending that I read The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian. What timing! I'm passing her recommendation along to you! |
