RALEIGH, N.C. — The New Year is just around the corner.

As we usher it in, it's the perfect time for families to come together and set meaningful goals. Whether you're a parent guiding your teen or a teen trying to establish clear objectives for your future, goals can pave the way for personal growth and shared accomplishments.

To create new goals, you both need to reflect on past ones while looking ahead. That’s why I wanted to create a guide to making New Year goals for both parents and teens.

Reflecting on years past

This year has been challenging for me, marked by numerous changes.

But near the end of it, I knew I needed to look back and reflect in order to make the next year better and more successful.

Reflections are best done with the guidance of family, friends and colleagues. As I looked back on my year, thoroughly analyzing what worked and how it could have been different, I asked for input from those close to me. I asked for their insight and comments.

Seeking guidance from loved ones and colleagues proved instrumental. They allowed me to see things in a new light. They counseled me on how to move forward and embrace the coming year.

If your year is ending differently than expected, look for clarity of thought and vision. Look to your friends to help provide this, but also look inwardly.

Intentional questions can help you reflect internally on the past year. Ask yourself:

  • What goals did I reach this year? How can I celebrate reaching them?
  • What goals do I wish I had achieved this year? What prevented me from reaching them?
  • What advice from others could have helped me better navigate the year?
  • What changes can I make to help achieve the goals I missed this year?

Now take a moment to sit in your thoughts. You’ve been battling for your dreams and investing commitment, yet progress may feel elusive. However, remember your past successes, your strength, and the moments of celebration.

I encourage you to find and maintain hope during your challenges and changes.

The power of hope

Life is a journey packed with both ambitions fulfilled and disappointments that linger.

Each year, I chase my dreams knowing that I could fail but I am driven ahead by the feeling of hope. Despite the challenges and disappointments, the resilience to dream again is what propels me forward.

Have you ever found yourself clinging to a dream, weathering setbacks, and enduring delays? In those moments, remember the significance of hope. Hope remains the dynamic force propelling us forward, encouraging persistence in the face of adversity.

The importance of finding hope cannot be overemphasized in times of darkness and difficulty. If you find yourself grappling with a challenging situation as we often do, recognize that hope is not just a survival tool but an incentive for thriving.

Embrace your dreams; they are the heartbeat of your journey. Keep hoping, stay focused, believe in your decisions, and don't let disappointment end your journey.

You have the strength to endure, accomplish your dreams, and thrive amid challenges. Hold onto hope.

Steps to creating New Year’s resolutions

Now, let’s look at what challenges you may be facing today.

If you're prepared for success, don't give up — you can make it. Refuse to give up on yourself.

In the face of challenges, readiness for success is another vital tool. Being ready and acting swiftly can make the difference between achieving your goals and falling short.

You can be ready by creating thoughtful and intentional goals for the year ahead. Here are a few practical steps to create New Year's resolutions.

  1. Take time to reflect on the dreams that you deferred in years past. What are the dreams that have been deferred?
  2. Now, look at these deferred dreams and ask yourself what lessons can be learned from them? What led to them being deferred?
  3. Look ahead and determine which goals you want to prioritize this year. What are dreams you want to see fulfilled?
  4. After you’ve envisioned multiple goals for the coming year, evaluate what resolutions are realistic and achievable goals. Ask yourself, is this reasonable to achieve in a year?
  5. Be sure to prioritize mental health in the goals you set and promote your own well-being.
  6. Cultivate a growth mindset. Focus on hope and tell yourself you can achieve this. You can grow and accomplish this.
  7. Jot down actionable and timely steps that help you achieve your dream.
  8. Finally, share your resolutions with friends, family, or a mentor.

Now, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and visualize celebrating success. You can do this.

As we embark on a new year, let the guiding principles of never losing hope shape your resolutions.

Understanding the power of hope, reflecting on past experiences, and following practical steps to create resilient goals will set you on a journey of growth, accomplishment, and the fulfillment of deferred dreams.

May the coming year be acclaimed as “Dreams Fulfilled.”
